Choosing Door Hardware for your Home

Added : July 18th, 2011

Choosing the perfect door accessories and door hardware for your house can be fun, but it is essential to remember that there are several factors in line to be considered before finalizing the door accessory.

The first criterion which you need to look in while selecting the door hardware and locks is the measurement of the depth, or thickness of the door you are looking in for. This factor is particularly very important in case you are looking forward to purchase the door for an old size or for a door which has unusual sizing pattern such as impact entry doors. The standard size for a front door is suppose to be 1 3/4" inches thickness, but these days not all the doors are made on the basis of the standard size as more and more home owners are choosing thicker front entrance doors.

In fact, hurricane impact entry doors come in 2 1/4" and 2 1/2" inches thicker which is approved by Florida impact approved standards. So it is very important that in case you are intending to purchase the front door, then it is important that you take the door thickness measurements approximately.

The next aspect which you need to consider is the type of hardware for your "entrance doors" for which you require for opening and closing the entry door or double entry doors. The appropriate option which you can go in for is the door handles, but most of the people these days are finding the operation of door iron pullers as a better option than the handles. The door pullers with a roll catch system act as a better option for the smaller children and even for people with arthritis.

Typically, the outer doors have a dead latch and a dead bolt or flush bolt therefor, which is keyed on the thumb button. While you are considering the door hardware of the interior door, it is important to note the kind of lock you want for the door, and how much secure should the lock be. It is always advisable by door companies that you do not install the keyed side of the lock on the interior of the room, just for the minor reason that the person could get locked inside the room in case they do not have the key. This would be a problem for a locksmith as well. In case you are installing the system of thumbed button or turn buttons then the person inside can easily get out without much of a strain in times of emergency such as a house fire.

The next aspect which you need to take into account is the appearance of your door hardware decor. Are you looking forward for the hardware which matches the time period of your house, or are you intending for a silver or brass shining on the door so as to reflect the period of the ancient times. Or are you looking forward for the door which suits to the look and feel of your house decorating needs. It is important to note that a shiny modern silver door knob will completely tend to be out of place between the burnished brass carriage lights at traditional settings.

The next criterion which you need to consider is the usage of the sturdy metal materials, most of the hardware these days have a special coating called as the physical vapor deposition (PVD) or painted powder coated colors such as black or oil rubbed bronze (US10B) which protects them from the surrounding environmental conditions. It is important that you select the door hardware material based on the time you are going to devote for maintaining it and keeping it snippy.
