Lots of times, a side mounted glass railing system for stairs is the only practical choice for design aesthetics to create a small space for the stairs.

The glass railings can be attached in either two ways which is side mounted or to the treads or flooring. Of course, this always depends on your local building code department on what you can and can't do for safety reasons.
