Different types of Interior Doors
An interior door is any door that does not provide access to the outside of a home, condo, apartment, penthouse or commercial building. Closet doors, bi-fold doors, kitchen pantry doors, bedroom doors, bathroom doors, and office doors are all considered interior doors. There are several different types of interior doors, many of which are used in both residential and commercial construction.
Standard interior doors are simply one-piece doors that fit an opening and are mounted on hinges to one side of the opening. They swing out or into a room, depending on installation or the home owners choice, and can accommodate an interior doorknob or handle, which can be locked from inside or outside as recommended to the room. Some standard interior doors are solid wood, but many are hollow or solid core paint grade. Deco Design Center solid mahogany wood interior doors can be stained where solid core interior doors can primed and painted in any color. A six-panel wood interior door is also a standard interior door, but with recessed panels and raised molding added as a design element.
Another type of interior door is the bi-fold door. Bifold doors are one of the most popular types of interior doors used for closets and between two frequently used rooms such as a bedroom leading to the bathroom. Bi-fold doors are two doors hinged together that fold into one another. They are mounted on a aluminum track that hangs from the head, or top, of the opening to make the bifold interior door slide smoothly. An door opening can hold one single bi-fold door or two doors that meet in the middle. They are a popular choice because when they are opened, there is less intrusion into the room than standard doors. The design of bifold doors can be solid, louvered, or a combination of both. There are also six-paneled solid wood bi-fold doors for added design. Bifold doors are generally not used for areas requiring privacy, such as bathrooms or a home theater room.
Luan doors are also doors that are mounted from a track at the head of the opening. The opening houses two doors that slide, one behind the other. Luan doors are commonly used as closet doors and they take up no additional space in the room when opened. However, their design prohibits both sides of the closet being accessible simultaneously, thus reducing the opening by half once installed.
Pocket doors are interior doors with a aluminum track that slide away from the opening and inside the wall space. They are very popular, especially in new home construction, because they allow an opening to be fully accessible while not requiring any additional space. They can be locked, and thus work for any room inside the house. However, replacing interior doors with pocket doors can generally be a little more extensive work than any other type or replacement of interior doors. There must be a non-load bearing wall strong enough and wide enough to house the door next to the opening and the existing framing must be torn out and replaced with framing that will accommodate the pocket door such as a heavy duty aluminum material track.
